An HVAC system that’s blowing hot air on a boiling hot day is no one’s idea of a good time. If your home or business AC system is pumping out hot air, here’s what to do.
First, check your thermostat settings.
It happens to the best of us: we accidentally switch our HVAC from “cool” to “heat.” Sometimes a kid messes with the HVAC remote, and your thermostat temperature ends up set way high. Check your thermostat to ensure that your HVAC is set to “cool”, and that it’s set to a normal temperature.
Turn off your AC and run the fan.
Why? One of the potential reasons your AC might be blowing hot air is that you have a freon leak. Leaked freon can freeze, potentially turning into a big block of ice. If that happens, you’ll need to allow time for the ice to defrost before a technician can come out to help – which means that you might be sweltering for a while! Turning off your AC and running the fan instead means that we can quickly deal with the issue upon arrival.
Check your filter.
If you can’t remember when you last replaced your HVAC filters, now is definitely time! Sometimes a dirty filter can cause issues with your system, blocking airflow or causing it to blow hot air. Before you call your HVAC technician, swap out your filters and see if that makes a difference.
Look for water.
If your indoor unit is surrounded by a puddle of water or you can smell a moldy smell coming from your vents, you might be dealing with a clogged condensate line. Other signs and symptoms of a clogged condensate line include condensation on your unit, water damage around your unit, and your system failing to start. Water can cause significant damage to your system, so call a technician immediately to ensure that your AC drain line is flowing as it should.
Do a vent check.
Run a hand over your vents and see if there’s any air coming out of them at all. If the system isn’t running at all, then you might be looking at a few issues. Perhaps it’s simply that a switch has tripped – check your fuse box just in case. But if nothing at all is happening, it’s possible that there’s an issue with your HVAC’s condenser fan motor. In this case, call Shaw to have a professional diagnose the issue and help get you back up and running.
If your AC is blowing hot air or isn’t functioning as efficiently as it should, Shaw is here to help. Give us a call to have one of our friendly technicians check your system and get that cool air flowing through your home or business asap!
