Is Your Hot Water Heater Trying to Tell You Something? 5 Warning Signs Northern Virginia Homeowners Shouldn’t Ignore

Energy Efficient, HVAC Maintenance

You rely on your hot water heater every single day — morning showers, dishwashing, laundry — and most of the time, it just quietly does its job. But when something’s off, it rarely announces itself all at once. Instead, your water heater sends subtle signals that something isn’t right. Ignoring those signals can mean waking up to a cold shower, coming home from vacation to a flooded utility room, or facing an emergency replacement on the worst possible day.

At Shaw Services, we’ve been keeping Northern Virginia homes comfortable for years. While most folks know us for our HVAC work, we also service, repair, and install hot water heaters — and we see the same warning signs over and over again. Here’s what to watch for.

1. Your Water Isn’t Getting Hot Enough

No one deserves to take a cold shower. If your showers are consistently spouting out “lukewarm” water, its a clear sign your water heater is struggling.

In Northern Virginia, groundwater temperatures can dip pretty significantly in winter months — which means your water heater has to work harder just to reach the same output. If it was already showing signs of wear, that seasonal stress can push it into underperforming territory.

Possible causes include:

  • A failing heating element (common in electric water heaters)
  • Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank reducing heating efficiency
  • A thermostat that’s drifted out of calibration
  • A unit that’s simply undersized for your household’s needs

Don’t just bump up the thermostat and move on — that’s a bandage, not a fix. If you’re consistently underwhelmed by your hot water, it’s worth having a technician take a look.

2. You’ve Noticed a Leak

A leaking water heater is never a minor inconvenience, but the stakes get a lot higher if you’re about to leave town. Nothing ruins a vacation like coming home to water damage in your utility room, laundry area, or wherever your tank lives.

Leaks can originate from several places: the pressure relief valve, the drain valve, or — most concerning — the tank itself. A small seep around the base of the tank often signals internal corrosion, meaning the tank wall has begun to fail. Once that happens, it’s not a matter of patching a fitting; the unit typically needs to be replaced.

Before any extended trip away from home, it’s smart to:

  • Visually inspect the area around your water heater for moisture, rust staining, or mineral deposits
  • Check the pressure relief valve for drips
  • Note how long the unit has been in service (more on that below)

If you spot anything suspicious before heading out, call us before you go. A quick service visit is far less expensive than the water damage you’d come home to.

3. You’re Running Out of Hot Water Much Faster Than You Used To

If your family’s routines haven’t changed, but the second person in the shower is suddenly getting hit with cold water, your water heater’s capacity has effectively shrunk, even if the tank is the same size it’s always been.

The most common culprit? Sediment buildup. Your neighborhood’s water supply, depending on your municipality or well system, can carry minerals that settle at the bottom of your tank over time. That layer of sediment acts as insulation between the burner and the water, forcing the heater to work longer and harder to heat less water.

You might also hear a rumbling, popping, or banging noise as the water heater operates. That’s the sound of water percolating through hardened sediment. It’s not dangerous on its own, but it’s a clear sign your tank needs attention.

A professional flush and inspection can often restore performance. In cases where buildup is severe or the tank is older, replacement may make more sense economically.

4. Your Temperature Gauge Is Set Lower Than It Should Be

The Department of Energy recommends setting your water heater thermostat to 120°F for most households. This suggestion is hot enough to be effective, but not so hot that it poses a scalding risk. If your thermostat is set below that and you’re still not getting satisfying hot water, something is wrong with the unit itself.

If someone has cranked the thermostat up to 130°F or higher trying to compensate for a unit that just isn’t delivering, that’s a warning sign too. Running your water heater at higher-than-necessary temperatures to chase adequate performance accelerates wear on the tank lining and heating components and significantly increases your energy bills.

A properly functioning water heater should deliver consistent results at a normal thermostat setting. If yours can’t, it’s worth a diagnostic call.

5. Bonus: Know Your Unit’s Age

This one isn’t a symptom… it’s practical advice. Most traditional tank water heaters have a useful lifespan of 8–12 years. If your unit is in that range, or you genuinely don’t know how old it is, you’re either overdue for an inspection or living on borrowed time.

You can usually find the manufacture date encoded in the unit’s serial number, often on a sticker near the top of the tank. Not sure how to read it? Give us a call, and we can help you decode it.

For Northern Virginia homeowners, proactively replacing an aging water heater before it fails can mean choosing your timeline, your unit, and avoiding the premium that comes with emergency service calls.
