Change your air filters.
Regularly changing your air filters is a quick and easy way to keep pollutant levels low – and to ensure that your HVAC system is working efficiently. Most standard air filters should be changed every 1-3 months; mesh filters should be gently cleaned before being replaced.
Clean your vents.
Supply vents and registers work hard to keep your home warm during the winter months. However, all that moving air can cause pet dander and dust to build up. Clean and vacuum your vents to keep your system running efficiently. If you have a zoned system, open or remove covers from unused vents, and clean those as well.
Clean around your condenser.
The condenser is the part of your system that lives outside – and it’s susceptible to dirt and grime. Clean dirt, leaves or built-up debris from around your condenser, and remove any blankets or lids you might have placed over it during those cold Virginia weather snaps. Weatherproof your house.
HVAC systems are mighty beasts, but you can prepare your system for spring by installing weather-efficient doors, windows and shades, and by using a humidifier to keep your air quality high. Regular vacuuming, dusting and sweeping will also reduce the strain on your system when warmer weather arrives.
Test your system.
Don’t wait for a hot day to find out that your AC isn’t working as it should! Switch on your HVAC system during a mild day and test to see whether cool air is being blown out.
