Busting Common HVAC Myths: The Truth Homeowners Need to Know

HVAC Maintenance, HVAC Tips, Tips for Homeowners

With over 15 years of experience in the HVAC industry, our family-run business has seen it all. From routine maintenance to emergency repairs, we’ve gathered insights and debunked myths that often lead to confusion among homeowners. Understanding your HVAC system is crucial for its efficiency, longevity, and your comfort. Today, we’re setting the record straight on some of the most common HVAC myths, ensuring you have the knowledge to make informed decisions about your home’s heating and cooling systems.

Myth: If The Filter Does Not Look Dirty, No Need To Change It

The belief that an HVAC filter is clean just because it doesn’t appear dirty to the naked eye is a common misconception that can lead to decreased air quality and system efficiency. HVAC filters are designed to trap and hold various types of airborne particles, including dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and bacteria. Many of the particles that filters capture are too small to see without magnification. Just because a filter doesn’t show visible signs of dirt, such as large dust clumps or pet hair, doesn’t mean it’s not full of smaller particles that can restrict airflow and reduce the system’s efficiency and overall health.

Myth: Change Your Filter Every 6 Months

We’re not sure who started this myth but we’re here to put an end to it. We recommend keeping your system in tip-top shape by changing your filter at least every 3 months. If you have pets in your home, just completed construction or renovations or use your system more than normal, we typically recommend swapping out your filters every 2 months to keep your indoor air quality pristine but also your system running as efficiently as possible.

Myth: Closing Vents in Unused Rooms Saves Energy

Quite the opposite! Many believe that closing vents in unused rooms will save on energy costs by redirecting airflow to the rooms in use. However, modern HVAC systems are designed to distribute air evenly throughout the home. Closing vents can cause the system to work harder and less efficiently because it disrupts the intended airflow pattern, potentially leading to increased energy consumption and causing unnecessary wear and tear on the HVAC system over time.

Myth: Bigger HVAC Units Are Always Better

The notion that a larger HVAC unit will automatically provide better cooling or heating is a common misconception. The truth is, an HVAC system needs to be properly sized for your home or commercial property. A unit that’s too large will not only be more expensive upfront but can lead to short cycling, where the system turns on and off more frequently than necessary. This can reduce the system’s efficiency, and longevity of the unit, and fail to adequately dehumidify the air.

Myth: Annual Maintenance Isn’t Necessary if the System Is Running Smoothly

Skipping annual maintenance because your HVAC system seems to be running without issues can lead to larger, more costly problems down the line. Regular HVAC maintenance by a professional can catch minor issues before they turn into major repairs, ensure the system is running at peak efficiency, and extend the lifespan of your unit. It’s a small investment that can save money and headaches in the long run. In fact, it’s this myth that spurred us to offer an annual maintenance package for our homeowners in the Northern Virginia area, because we’ve seen too many of our friends and neighbors throughout the years throw money at a new unit when proper maintenance would have given their HVAC system a few more years of operation.

Myth: Cranking the Thermostat Up or Down Heats or Cools the Home Faster

This one…we hear it often! Many people think that setting the thermostat to a much higher or lower temperature will speed up the heating or cooling process. In reality, HVAC systems work at the same pace regardless of the temperature setting. Setting the thermostat to extreme temperatures can result in excessive energy use and won’t get your home to your desired temperature any faster. Think of your HVAC system as the tortoise in the story Tortoise and the Hare…slow and steady wins the race!

Myth: If Your System is Freezing on the Outside, It Needs Immediate Service

Observing ice on your heat pump’s outdoor unit, especially during colder months, can be alarming and lead to the assumption that immediate service is required. However, it’s essential to understand that heat pumps operate with a built-in defrost cycle to manage ice build-up. This cycle is designed to temporarily reverse the refrigeration process, melting away ice accumulation without compromising the unit’s efficiency. Before calling for service, check if the system is in its defrost cycle, as indicated by the unit switching to cooling mode temporarily and the outdoor fan shutting off. If the ice persists after the cycle or the unit doesn’t enter the defrost mode, then it’s time to call Shaw Services.

Myth: ‘Smart’ Thermostats Are Connected to Your System and Can Gauge How Hot or Cold It Is Running

A common misunderstanding is that thermostats are intricately connected to the HVAC system in a way that allows them to read the system’s output temperature or efficiency. If we had a nickel for every time we set the record straight on this common myth. In reality, a thermostat’s primary function is to set the desired temperature for your home and signal the HVAC system to turn on or off to maintain that temperature. It does not provide real-time feedback on how efficiently or effectively the system is heating or cooling your space, no matter how ‘smart’ your thermostat. For that reason, if you notice that your home is not reaching the desired temperature, the issue may lie within the HVAC system itself or in the home’s insulation, rather than with the thermostat.
