Warmer weather is here, so you turn on your AC – only to find that it’s not working the way it should. Here’s how to identify and troubleshoot those common HVAC issues so that you get to sit in climate-controlled comfort this summer.
Is your outside line frozen?
If your line outside is frozen or you have ice on your coil, turn your unit off or to fan only. Your HVAC technician will need to wait for the ice to defrost before they can get to work – so help us (and yourself) out!
Is your thermostat set to cool?
We’ve had some wild weather in Northern VA recently, so you might have switched over your system from heat to cool and back again. Before calling out a technician, check whether your system is set to cool.
Is your power on?
It’s a no-brainer, but we have to say it. If you’ve had a blackout, your system might not have turned back on. And if the power is still off, well, your AC unit won’t work. Before you call us, make sure the power is on first.
Have you accidentally flipped a switch?
Some houses – new ones in particular – have a switch near the HVAC system or in the utility closet that looks like a light switch, but is actually the power to your HVAC. We get at least one call a month that turns out to be just this.
Has your breaker tripped?
If your system isn’t running at all, check your breaker box to see whether the breaker has tripped. Check the overall breaker and the one specifically marked for your HVAC, and switch it back on if needed.
Are your filters clogged up?
Clogged filters mean that your system can’t breathe, making it almost impossible to push that cool air through. If it’s been a while since you’ve changed your filters, or you’ve done some home renovations that have kicked up extra dust, change out your filters and see if that helps with the air flow.
Is there debris around your outdoor unit?
Windy or stormy days can result in sticks, leaves and grass clippings building up around your outdoor condenser unit. Clear away any debris around your unit and see if your system function improves.
Is your indoor unit blocked by storage items?
HVAC units tend to live in closets or small utility rooms, and it’s very common for residents to put storage boxes or seasonal decor in those same spaces. If your items are stored in such a way that they block up the grates on your unit, you’ll find it won’t work as well as it should.
Are your thermostat batteries flat?
Some thermostats are hard-wired, and some have batteries. Pop your thermostat off the wall to see whether yours takes batteries, and if so, replace them. If your system is hardwired, give us a call instead.
Is your capacitor blown?
Sometimes a lightning surge can put your capacitor out of action. This is very common, so don’t freak out if it happens to you! Don’t try to fix it yourself – give us a call and we’ll handle it for you.
If you’ve tried all of the above and your unit still isn’t working or is working at reduced capacity, give Shaw a call. In the meantime, turn off your unit to avoid any potential damage to your system, and to let your system defrost if needed. That way your technician will be able to get to work ASAP!
